8 Tips for Staying Safe Online
One of the best ways to avoid fraud is to become an educated consumer. Take a moment to read these important tips on how to keep yourself and your information safe when conducting business online.
Set complex passwords
A complex password uses a combination of upper and lower-case letters and numbers and is not easily guessed. Change your password frequently. Don’t write it down or share it with others.
Don’t reveal personal info via email
Emails and texts can be masked to look like they’re from a trusted sender when they’re not. Never send account numbers, Social Security numbers, or passwords via email or text.
Don’t download that file
Opening email attachments can allow harmful malware or viruses onto your computer. Keep your antivirus software (Norton, McAfee, etc.) up to date. Never open attachments from people you don’t know.
Links aren’t always what they seem
Never log in from a link embedded in an email. Criminals create fake email addresses and web pages that mimic legitimate sites. Type the URL address directly into your browser, then log in.
Websites aren’t always what they seem
If you navigate to a website from a link you didn’t type, you may land on a convincing fake. Always verify that the page URL matches exactly what you’d expect before entering any information.
Log off when you’re done
When you’re ready to leave a site you’ve logged into, log off properly rather than just closing the browser tab or window. This ends your session and prevents unauthorized access.
Monitor account activity
Review your account activity regularly — either online or through your monthly statements. Report any unauthorized transactions right away. The sooner you report, the more we can do.
Assess your online banking risk
We recommend periodically assessing your online banking risk and putting increased security controls in place where weaknesses are found — particularly for members with business accounts.
