If You Find an Error — How to Dispute It
1
Gather your documentation
Collect bank statements, payment confirmations, or any records proving the information is wrong.
2
File a dispute with the bureau
Go directly to Equifax.com, Experian.com, or TransUnion.com and submit a dispute online, by mail, or by phone.
3
Contact the original creditor
Also dispute the error directly with the lender or collector that reported it — they must investigate too.
4
Wait 30–45 days for resolution
Bureaus must respond within 30 days (sometimes 45). They must fix or remove errors they can't verify.
5
Check again after resolution
Pull your report again to confirm the error was removed. Errors sometimes reappear — follow up if needed.
6
Escalate if ignored
If unresolved, file a complaint with the CFPB at ConsumerFinance.gov or contact your state's attorney general.

💡 Tip: You're entitled to free weekly credit reports at AnnualCreditReport.com. Check all three bureaus — errors on one don't always appear on the others. Keep a copy of this checklist with your dispute records.
