When Money Gets Tight
โ€” Your Action Plan

Financial hardship happens to nearly everyone at some point. This is not a judgment โ€” it is a plan. Work through each step in order. Triage first, cut second, make calls third, then build your path forward.

Step 1
01
Know Your Numbers Before You Do Anything Else
Fifteen minutes of honest numbers will tell you exactly how bad this is โ€” and whether it is a short-term gap or something bigger.

Written down every source of monthly income with its exact amount
Job, side work, benefits, child support, anything that comes in. Use the lowest expected amount for irregular income. You need the real number โ€” not a hope.

Listed every bill due in the next 30 days with the exact amount and due date
Log into every account. Write the exact dollar and due date โ€” not a rough estimate. Unknown amounts create panic. Exact numbers allow planning.

Counted every dollar available โ€” checking, savings, Venmo, cash in wallet
This is your war chest. Include everything. Even savings you would rather not touch still counts โ€” you need to know your full number before deciding what to use.

Where my cash is
Identified the exact cause โ€” and whether it is temporary or ongoing
One-time crisis (medical bill, car repair) needs a short-term bridge. Ongoing gap (hours cut, job loss) needs a structural fix. The answer changes everything about your strategy.

A Practical Order for Prioritizing Bills When Money Is Limited
When there is not enough money to cover everything at once, focus first on the bills tied to basic needs, housing, utilities, transportation, and required minimum payments. The goal is to stay as current as possible and call early when you cannot pay.
Critical order
โ–ผ
๐Ÿšจ Pay in this sequence. Skipping ahead can cause irreversible harm. Credit card minimums always come last.
#1 โ€” Food and water for every person in your household
Before any bill, before any creditor, before anything โ€” food comes first. Check WV food banks, WV DHHR SNAP benefits (1-888-897-8600), and community pantries. This is not optional.

#2 โ€” Rent or mortgage payment
Missing rent can start eviction. Missing a mortgage can start foreclosure. Both take time to escalate โ€” but act before you miss a payment, not after. Call your landlord or servicer immediately. Many will work with you if you call first.
Eviction / Foreclosure RiskCall before you miss

#3 โ€” Utilities: electric, gas, heat, and water
Power and heat shutoff can happen fast, especially in winter. Call your utility company before you miss a payment. West Virginia utilities offer LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance) and payment arrangements. Getting cut off costs more to reconnect than to prevent.

#4 โ€” Transportation to work (car payment or insurance)
If losing your car means losing your job, transportation is essential. Pay enough to keep it running and insured. If you are upside-down on a car payment you cannot afford, call your lender now โ€” Pioneer's team can often find a solution before a missed payment shows up on your credit.

#5 โ€” Health insurance, especially if you have dependents or prescriptions
Losing health coverage during an already stressful time is dangerous. Check if you qualify for WV Medicaid (income-based, fast enrollment at dhhr.wv.gov). One medical emergency without coverage can multiply your crisis many times over.

#6 โ€” Credit cards and unsecured loans: make at least the minimum payment when possible
During a tight month, avoid paying extra on credit cards until your essentials are covered. If you cannot make the minimum payment, contact the creditor before the due date and ask what options may be available. Missing payments can affect your credit, so the goal is to stay current or communicate early.

Move From Surviving to Recovering
Once the immediate crisis is stabilized, shift gears. These steps move you from getting through this week to not being here again.
Recovery steps
โ–ผ
Find one source of additional income โ€” even temporary
Overtime, a second job, selling unused items, gig work (DoorDash, TaskRabbit, Instacart), freelancing, or odd jobs. One extra shift per week at $12/hr is $200/month. That is a real dent in most gaps.

My plan
Started building a $500 emergency fund โ€” even $10 this week
The hardest part of being in a financial crisis is that one unexpected charge can restart the spiral. Even $10 a week builds toward a $500 buffer that absorbs the next flat tire or copay without derailing everything again.
