Ongoing Account Best Practices
Check these off as you build them into your routine — these habits protect you and your account long-term.
0 / 5
Check my balance before every large purchase
30 seconds in the app prevents a $35 overdraft fee. Make it automatic — open the app before you open your wallet for anything over $50.
30-second habit
Notes
Review my full statement once a month
Scan every transaction line. Look for charges you don't recognize — fraud is most often caught by members who check their statements, not by the bank.
Best fraud prevention habit
Notes
Keep a $100–$200 buffer in my checking at all times
A small cushion above zero prevents overdrafts from timing mismatches — a charge posts a day before your deposit, a forgotten subscription renews. Buffer = safety net.
Minimum buffer goal
Notes
Use a fee-free ATM when I need cash
Pioneer offers access to over 300,000 fee-free ATMs nationwide. Find one in the Pioneer app before withdrawing cash.
300,000+ fee-free ATMs
Notes
Set up a recurring savings transfer on payday
Even $25 per paycheck, transferred automatically to savings the day direct deposit arrives, builds an emergency fund without requiring willpower. Set it and forget it.
Automate the 20% ruleSet up in online banking
Notes
Monthly Fee — $0
Pioneer's basic checking account has no monthly maintenance fee. Keep your account in good standing and you pay nothing to have the account.
⚠️
Overdraft — Avoid It
Spending more than your balance can trigger an overdraft fee. Link your savings account for free overdraft protection and set a low-balance alert to stay ahead of it.
300,000+ ATMs — Fee-Free
Pioneer members have access to over 300,000 fee-free ATMs nationwide. Find the nearest one in the Pioneer mobile app before you withdraw.
🔒
Freeze your card instantly if lostIn the Pioneer app you can freeze your debit card with one tap if it's lost or stolen — no waiting on hold, no branch visit required.
📲
Mobile deposit is availableSnap a photo of checks through the Pioneer app to deposit them without visiting a branch. Funds are typically available the next business day.

You're an owner, not a customerAs a credit union member, you have a voice. Pioneer is governed by its members. Any profits go back to members in the form of better rates and lower fees.
